Welcome to Chios
The island of mastiha, legends, and hidden treasures
Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, just a few kilometers from the Turkish coast, Chios invites you on a journey off the beaten path.
Far from mass tourism, this unique Greek island offers a delightful blend of historical heritage, preserved natural landscapes, and living traditions.
Chios and its millennia-old history
The legendary birthplace of Homer, Chios has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Its ancient monuments, fortified villages, and Byzantine monasteries make every stone seem to whisper a story.
Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a jewel of 11th-century Byzantine art, nestled in the mountains. The medieval village of Mesta, with its maze-like alleys and stone houses, transports visitors to the age of pirates and crusaders.
A key moment: in 1822, Chios was the scene of a tragic massacre during the Greek War of Independence. This event, immortalized by the painter Delacroix, deeply moved Europe and reinforced the call for Greek freedom.
The secret of Chios: Mastiha
Unique in the world, Chios mastiha is a natural resin harvested only in the south of the island. Used since antiquity for its medicinal and aromatic properties, it is now found in chewing gum, cosmetics, liqueurs, and sweets.
The village of Pyrgi, known for their geometric decorations ("xysta"), as well as Armolia and Lithi, bear witness to this age-old tradition.
A visit to the Mastiha Museum immerses you in this fascinating world.
